Get your money back – part 1

Is your company registered for Skills Development Levy (SDL) ? If so, did you know that you are entitled to benefits ?

What is Skills Development Levy (SDL)?

SDL is a levy imposed to encourage learning and development in South Africa and is determined by an employers salary bill.

What are the benefits ?

1. Mandatory grant
2. Discretionary grant – To be discussed next week
3. Tax allowances when you implement learnerships – To be discussed next week

What is the Mandatory grant?

As an employer, if you submit the Workplace Skills Plan(WSP) and an Annual Training Report(ATR), 20% of the levies that you have paid will be paid back to your company as a mandatory grant.

An Example

– Annual Total Salary = R 1 000 000

– Annual SDL (1%)  = R 10 000

-Therefore, Mandatory grant paid back to your company = R 2 000

Who must pay SDL ?

An employer with a total salary of more than R 500 000 per year. That’s R 41 666.67 per month.

How much SDL must be paid per month ?

1% of total salary per month.

Happy Tax Savings 🙂
